MATTY Godden scored his first goal since August to help 10-man Coventry City secure a point in a 1-1 draw against high-flying Luton Town.
Godden netted from the penalty spot, on his first start since October, to draw City level after Tom Lockyer had opened the scoring inside the first minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena whilst Josh Wilson-Esbrand was sent off late on.
The result means the Sky Blues sit 14th in the Sky Bet Championship table, seven points outside of the play-off places
Coventry were left stunned when Luton captain Lockyer turned home Alfie Doughty’s deflected cross from the right after just 40 seconds.
City responded soon after when a clever dummy from Godden allowed the ball to run to Viktor Gyokeres who drove into the box and fired a shot towards the top left corner that was superbly saved behind by Ethan Horvath.
And the Sky Blues were awarded a penalty late in the half when Gabriel Osho pulled down Gyokeres as the striker attempted to turn home Godden’s square ball from the right.
Godden duly dispatched the resulting spot kick in first-half injury time as he drilled the ball down the middle of goal as Horvath dove to his left.
Coventry looked to complete the turnaround in the second half when Luke McNally embarked on a fine run before seeing his low shot from 20-yards out well held by Horvath.
And City came within a whisker of taking the lead when Palmer curled a sensational effort against the crossbar with Horvath beaten.
At the other end, Ben Wilson made a superb save to his right to keep out Cauley Woodrow’s header before denying the same player from the resulting corner when one-on-one at the back post.
However, City’s chances to taking the points were dealt a blow on 85 minutes as Wilson-Esbrand was sent off for a second bookable offence on his full Sky Blues debut for a foul on Fred Onyedinma.
Coventry are next in action at home to Millwall on Tuesday, February 14 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the CBS Arena.
