KYLE McFadzean’s late own goal denied Coventry City a crucial victory at relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic as the Sky Blues were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw.
The veteran centre-back put through his own net with seven minutes left to play after Viktor Gyokeres had opened the scoring at the DW Stadium.
And the result means Coventry sit ninth in the Championship table, four points outside the play-off places.
The home side forced Ben Wilson into an early save as the Sky Blues stopper pushed Danel Sinani’s low effort from 25-yards out behind for a corner.
And Wilson was forced to turn another Sinani effort around the post later in the half after the Wigan midfielder cut in from the right and curled a shot goalwards.
Mark Robins’ side went close to an opener at the other end when Gustavo Hamer played a superb pass through to Sean Maguire who took the ball around the keeper only for Charlie Hughes to clear off the line.
And Coventry took the lead on 52 minutes when Gyokeres guided Jake Bidwell’s cross from the left into the left corner of the goal from six-yards out.
City almost doubled their lead when Josh Eccles sent a teasing cross into the box that just evaded Matty Godden on the stretch at the back post.
However, Wigan equalised on 83 minutes when McFadzean could only deflect Ryan Nyambe’s cross into his own net with City unable to find a winner in the closing stages.
Coventry are next in action away at Blackpool on Saturday, March 18 with kick-off at 3pm at Bloomfield Road.
