FOOTBALL - Sky Blues held in Preston stalemate

Coventry Editorial 2nd Mar, 2023   0

COVENTRY City were held to a goalless draw at Preston North End as the Sky Blues extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

Mark Robins’ side were unable to find a winner as Callum Doyle went closest to breaking the deadlock for the Sky Blues at Deepdale.

The result means Coventry sit 10th in the Sky Bet Championship table, five points outside of the play-off places.

City started the brighter of the teams when Doyle’s venomous effort from 20-yards out was pushed behind by Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

And Coventry went close soon after as a ball was floated into the box and volleyed inches over the top by Jamie Allen who made an excellent run to meet the pass.

Preston spurned a glorious chance to take the lead on 18 minutes when Ched Evans shot wide from 10-yards our from Daniel Johnson’s delicate pass.

And the Sky Blues responded minutes later when Gustavo Hamer broke forward and found Allen in space only for the midfielder’s tame effort to be easily saved by Woodman.

There was little noteworthy action in the second period as Ben Wilson saved from Alan Browne and Johnson before Liam Delap somehow shot wide from six-yards out following a goalmouth scramble.

The game’s last chance fell to Sky Blues defender Jake Bidwell who could only blaze over on his 500th career appearance from 12-yards out.

Coventry are next in action away at Huddersfield Town on Saturday, March 4 with kick-off at 3pm at the John Smith’s Stadium.
