COVENTRY City failed to have a shot on target as the Sky Blues slipped to a 1-0 defeat to promotion-chasing Burnley.
Nathan Tella scored the game’s only goal on 39 minutes with Jonathan Panzo’s header against the crossbar the closest Coventry came to a leveller at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The result means Coventry still prop up the Sky Bet Championship table as their four-game unbeaten run came to a disappointing end.
Both teams lacked any real cutting edge throughout with Burnley first to try their luck when Josh Cullen dragged a shot well wide of the target.
And Vincent Kompany’s side broke the deadlock shortly before half time when Tella brilliantly controlled Cullen’s clipped pass before finishing in off the left-hand post to leave Ben Wilson helpless.
The Sky Blues almost drew level on the stroke of half time when Panzo met Kasey Palmer’s corner from the left only for the ball to hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce the wrong side of the line.
Chances were at a premium in the second period as Jay Rodriguez fired into the side netting before Panzo shot well wide from distance at the other end.
Burnley had a chance to secure the points when Wilson’s attempted clearance deflected into the path of substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson only for the midfielder’s tame effort from 30-yards out to be saved by the recovering Wilson.
The Sky Blues had one last chance to equalise when the ball fell to substitute Todd Kane just outside the penalty area as the full-back fired wide of the post with his first touch.
Coventry are next in action away at Cardiff City on Saturday, October 15 with kick-off at 3pm at the Cardiff City Stadium.
