COVENTRY City are now just one point away from securing a play-off place after the Sky Blues eased to a 2-0 win against Birmingham City at a sold out Coventry Building Society Arena.
Josh Eccles’ first senior goal put Coventry ahead before Viktor Gyokeres sealed the points with a penalty just before half time to extend the Sky Blues’ unbeaten run to six matches.
The result means City sit fifth in the Championship table with just one match left to play and would clinch a top-six finish with a draw on the final day of the season.
And the Sky Blues made the perfect start when Eccles’ first time shot from 15-yards out found the net on three minutes from Viktor Gyokeres’ pass.
City doubled their lead on 42 minutes when Gyokeres fired a penalty into the bottom right corner after Jordan James was penalised for handball.
The home side almost extended their advantage in the second period when Gyokeres allowed Gustavo Hamer’s pass to run across his body and jinked his way into the box only to shoot over.
Birmingham went close late on as Kevin Long glanced a header inches wide before Jake Bidwell saw an outside of the boot effort tipped over by Neil Etheridge at the other end.
And Blues were denied a consolation when Juninho Bacuna’s curled effort came back off the post as City held on to secure another huge win and inch closer to a coveted top-six finish.
Coventry are away at Middlesbrough on the final day of the season (Monday, May 8) with kick-off at 3pm at the Riverside Stadium.
