VIKTOR Gyokeres scored the only goal as Coventry City secured their first win of the season with a 1-0 success against Middlesbrough.
The Sweden international scored the winner on 17 minutes to end a run of seven league games without a win at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
And the result means Coventry now have six points from eight matches as they remain rooted to the foot of the Championship table.
The Sky Blues made a positive start when Fankaty Dabo’s cross from the right was controlled by Gyokeres who in turn found Kasey Palmer only for the midfielder to shoot wide.
And City took the lead when Dabo’s ball down the line was latched onto by Gyokeres who drove in-field before finishing through Boro keeper Zack Steffen.
Middlesbrough responded when Rodrigo Muniz found some space 20-yards from goal before he stung the palms of City goalkeeper Ben Wilson who made a comfortable save.
And Wilson was called into action again soon after when the ball deflected kindly into the path of Muniz only for the striker to volley straight at the Coventry stopper from 12-yards out.
City were denied by Steffen in the second period as Ben Sheaf tried his luck from distance before Dael Fry headed over from a corner from six-yards out at the other end.
The home side had chances to double their lead late on the first of which saw Palmer loop an effort several yards wide of the post after Steffen’s clearance fell at his feet some 40-yards from goal with the Boro stopper stranded.
And Gyokeres was denied a second when his effort was deflected into the side netting at the near post as Mark Robins’ side held on to claim a crucial three points.
Coventry are next in action away at Bristol City on Tuesday, October 4 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Ashton Gate.
