COVENTRY City need just a single point on the final day of the season away at Middlesbrough to secure a coveted play-off place as the Sky Blues dream of a return to the Premier League for the first time in over two decades.
The Sky Blues boosted their top-six chances with a 2-0 derby win against Birmingham City at a sold out Coventry Building Society Arena as Josh Eccles and Viktor Gyokeres struck in the first-half to seal victory.
However, City are one of five teams battling it out for the final two play-off spots and face a tough test away at Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough who have already guaranteed a fourth-place finish.
Sky Blues boss Mark Robins said: “We could not go to a more difficult place, Middlesbrough is tough place to go, no matter how they play.
“Who knows, we might end up playing them again twice after. But the chance would be brilliant.
“We have been able to say thanks for the support of the season, hopefully we can see them all again away at Boro.
“Hopefully, like I have said, we can extend our home season.”
Against Birmingham, the Sky Blues made the perfect start when Eccles’ first time shot from 15-yards out found the net on three minutes from Viktor Gyokeres’ pass.
And City doubled their lead on 42 minutes when Gyokeres fired a penalty into the bottom right corner after Jordan James was penalised for handball to ensure the Sky Blues head into the final game of the season in fifth place in the Championship table.
Coventry’s clash with Middlesbrough takes place on Monday, May 8 with kick-off at 3pm at the Riverside Stadium.
