FOOTBALL - Sky Blues still winless after defeat at Norwich

COVENTRY City’s difficult start to the season continued with a 3-0 defeat away at Norwich City as the Sky Blues remain bottom of the table without a win this season.

City have made a worrying start to the campaign and were easily beaten at Carrow Road as goals from Teemu Pukki, Josh Sargent and Kieran Dowell saw their winless run extended to five matches.

The Sky Blues sit bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table, having picked up just one point from their opening five matches, and are now seven points from safety albeit with games in hand on the teams above them.

And Coventry fell behind on 14 minutes when Finland international Pukki clinically found the bottom right corner after being played in by Marcelino Núñez after he dispossessed Gustavo Hamer deep in the Sky Blues half.

City thought they had drawn level when veteran centre-back Kyle McFadzean blasted home after Tim Krul flapped at a high ball only for the goal to be disallowed due to Tyler Walker being in an offside position.

And the Canaries made the most of that let-off to double their lead in first-half injury time as Sargent netted his fifth goal of the season from close range into an empty net after he was picked out by Aaron Ramsey following good work by Pukki down the left.

The Sky Blues had goalkeeper Ben Wilson to thank for keeping them in the game when he made a fine save with his legs to prevent Sargent from adding to his tally.

City rarely threatened but should have reduced the deficit when substitute Viktor Gyokeres was slipped through by Walker’s deft touch only to be denied by Krul when one-on-one.

And Mark Robins’ side went close again soon after as Fankaty Dabo won the ball in a superb challenge just outside the Norwich penalty area before drilling an effort inches wide of the left-hand post.

However, Norwich made sure of the points on 81 minutes when Dowell ran onto Sargent’s pass and swept the ball home.

Coventry are next in action at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, September 10 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
