TIM Sherwood believes Coventry City would need a ‘huge amount of surgery’ if they achieved promotion to the Premier League this season.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa boss turned Sky Sports pundit finished his playing career with the Sky Blues, making 11 appearances for the club in the 2004/05 season.
And Sherwood likened Coventry to last season’s play-off final winners Sunderland, should the Sky Blues achieve promotion to the Premier League, after the Black Cats signed no fewer than 15 new players in the summer.
Speaking to Casinostugan, Sherwood said: “I covered QPR vs Coventry City and I can’t believe where Frank Lampard has them in the league.
“I may have only seen them live a few times this season but they haven’t looked like a team capable of running away with it in the Championship.
“Then again I might have said the same thing about Sunderland last year.
“When they came up through the play-offs I thought they’d go straight back down. I wasn’t sure they would get double figures.
“But their recruitment has been absolutely magnificent. Granit Xhaka has been the catalyst but there’s loads of good players they’ve brought in, and they needed surgery.
“Coventry will need a huge amount of surgery too. But you can’t take it away from Frank. He has done such a good job to take them to where they are.
“It’s just whether he can get them over the line. It looks like they are going to have to limp over the line at this rate because they have not looked very good at all.
“That’s the politest way I can put it. Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough would be worrying me if I was Coventry.
“I think Middlesbrough look the strongest side at the moment.
“If I was Frank Lampard my head would be on a swivel looking at who’s coming after me now because Hull City are making a run too, and who saw that happening?”
