VICTOR Torp’s stunning debut goal was not enough to send Coventry City into the fifth round of the FA Cup after the Sky Blues drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.
Torp became the first City player to score on debut since September 2020 with a thunderbolt from distance only for Djeidi Gassama to score a late equaliser for Wednesday at Hillsborough.
The replay will take place on Tuesday, February 6 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
And the winner of the tie will play history-makers Maidstone United at home in the fifth round of the competition.
Wednesday had the game’s first chance when Gassama picked up a loose ball before driving towards goal and firing a low effort narrowly wide of the post.
City responded with a chance of their own as Josh Eccles sent a volley high over the crossbar after a corner was floated into the box from the left.
However, Coventry took the lead on the stroke of half time when Torp received Ben Sheaf’s pass before unleashing a sensational effort into the top left corner from more than 25-yards out.
City spurned a glorious chance to double their lead after the break when Ellis Simms collected a loose pass deep in the Wednesday half only to shoot straight at Owls goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
The home side almost drew level soon after when Ike Ugbo smashed an effort against the outside of the post from the edge of the penalty area after cutting in from the left.
However, Wednesday eventually equalised on 84 minutes as Gassama’s low effort from just inside the penalty area found the net via the aid of the post.
The Sky Blues had a chance to win the game at the death only for Owls keeper Charles to deny substitute Jamie Allen from 10-yards out.
Coventry are next in action at home to Bristol City on Tuesday, January 30 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the CBS Arena.
