FOOTBALL - Wilson saves injury-time penalty to earn Coventry point at West Brom

BEN WILSON saved an injury-time penalty as Coventry City played out a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion to all but end the Sky Blues play-off hopes.

Wilson, who started for the first time since January, denied Karlan Grant at the death from the spot to ensure the game ended in a stalemate at the Hawthorns.

The result means City sit 11th in the Sky Bet Championship table, six points outside of the play-off places with two matches left to play with a vastly inferior goal difference to the teams in the top-six.

In a game bereft of chances, West Brom created the first opening when Grant was played in behind the Coventry defence only for Wilson to be quick off his line and claim the bouncing ball as the striker miscued his effort.

And Wilson made another impressive stop in the second half when he kept out Matt Clarke’s powerful header from a corner.

The Sky Blues went close when substitute Martyn Waghorn curled a free-kick inches past the post from 20-yards out with Baggies keeper David Button at full stretch.

And Coventry were denied again soon after when Viktor Gyokeres had a shot pushed away before Ben Sheaf jinked his way into the box before shooting straight at Button from 15-yards out.

Former England international Andy Carroll then volleyed over from four-yards out in the closing stages as he failed to keep his effort down from a corner from the left.

West Brom were then awarded a soft penalty in injury-time when Callum Robinson went to ground under a challenge from Michael Rose.

However, Wilson held his nerve, diving low to his right to push Grant’s effort to safety with the final touch of the game.

Coventry are next in action at home to Huddersfield Town on Saturday, April 30 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
