FOOTBALL - Wright brace in vain as Coventry City beaten at Preston

HAJI Wright’s brace failed to end Coventry City’s losing run in the league as the Sky Blues suffered a 3-2 defeat away at Preston North End.

Wright opened and completed the scoring at Deepdale as goals from Duane Holmes, Alan Browne and Milutin Osmajic condmened City to a fourth successive defeat.

The result means Coventry sit 20th in the Championship table, five points above the relegation zone.

Preston almost took the lead when Ben Wilson fumbled Browne’s shot from distance as the ball dropped inches past the post.

However, the Sky Blues took the lead on 33 minutes when Wright turned home the ball from close range after Freddie Woodman kept out Matty Godden’s initial effort.

The home side equalised five minutes later as Holmes drilled a shot into the bottom left corner from 15-yards out.

And Preston completed the turnaround on 41 minutes when Browne scored from the penalty spot after Kyle McFadzean was adjudged to have pushed Osmajic to the ground in the box.

The Sky Blues almost drew level in the second half as Woodman tipped Ben Sheaf’s effort from distance over the crossbar.

However, Preston extended their lead on 71 minutes as Osmajic headed home Liam Millar’s cross from the left past Wilson from six-yards out.

City reduced the deficit on 83 minutes as Wright pounced for a second time to finish the rebound after Woodman parried Josh Eccles’ powerful low shot into the American’s path.

The Sky Blues pushed for a late leveller but were unable to halt their losing run despite a valiant effort in Lancashire.

Coventry are next in action at home to Stoke City on Saturday, November 11 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
