HAJI Wright scored his first Coventry City goal as the Sky Blues eased to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Middlesbrough.
Club-record signing Wright sealed victory from the bench after Matty Godden opened the scoring early on while Darragh Lenihan put through his own net in injury time at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Victory is Coventry’s first in the league this season following their opening day defeat at rivals Leicester City.
The Sky Blues created the game’s first chance when Kasey Palmer released Ellis Simms down the left as the striker cut inside only for Middlesbrough goalkeeper Seny Dieng to make a comfortable save.
And City took the lead on 11 minutes as Godden found the bottom left corner from inside the box after Josh Eccles’ initial shot was blocked into his path.
The home side went close to a second soon after as Dieng could only parry Godden’s low effort into the path of Milan van Ewijk who fired wide through a couple of bodies.
Mark Robins’ side continued to dominate the chances as Simms shot straight at Dieng from Jay Dasilva’s pass despite having Godden in support across the box.
Boro’s first real sight of goal came at the start of the second half when Morgan Rogers embarked on a sensational run from the halfway line all the way into the Coventry box only to shoot a couple of yards wide.
The visitors should have drawn level soon after when a mix up at the back allowed Rogers to square the ball to Sammy Silvera who inexplicably blazed over the bar from seven-yards out.
However, the Sky Blues doubled their lead on 70 minutes when club-record signing Wright fired a first time effort into the right corner of the goal just minutes after coming off the bench from Palmer’s dangerous corner.
And City extended their lead in injury time when Godden’s ball from the right went in off Boro defender Lenihan to cap a perfect afternoon for the Sky Blues.
