AFTER being named winners of the Midland Division Two August Team of the Month, Alvis Sporting continued their impressive run of form by progressing through to the quarter-final stage of the Midland League President’s Cup.
Alvis took a huge step towards winning the November award too by winning decisively at Sutton United 3-1 on Saturday.
Playing with the confidence of a side unbeaten so far this season, the Green Lane outfit almost went in front in the first minute when a long throw in from Kyle Walker resulted in a goalmouth scramble, before being hacked off the line by a Sutton United defender.
The breakthrough came on the half-hour when a corner from the left from Demi Smikle was only partially cleared by the Sutton defence, and Tommy Maguire took full advantage scoring with a low drive from 20 yards through a crowded goalmouth.
Alvis extended their lead just before the break when a great ball from 17-year-old Youth team player, Jordan Fesel, was back headed by Dildale Linton into the path of Daniel Pidgeon who duly despatched the ball home from 12 yards.
Although Sutton’s Jared McGivern pulled a goal back on 56 minutes following a free kick which resulted in a goalmouth melee, Alvis continued to dominate, and secured their passage into the final eight in the last minute when substitute Charlie Cook found Pidgeon who scored his second goal of the game from close range.
Alvis manager, Damian Cassidy, said: “Whilst it was a tricky pitch to play, on our new signings settled in well, and it is pleasing to note that our squad is coming together in a positive fashion.”
This Saturday Alvis Sporting return to league action when they entertain fifth-placed Knowle at Green Lane.
