Gary Havelock keen to protect Jason Garrity

Coventry Editorial 6th May, 2015 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

GARY Havelock believes Bees’ fast-track reserve Jason Garrity is putting too much pressure on his shoulders in his desire to be the best,

Garrity was one the Bees’ star men as they progressed to the Elite League play-off final last season.

But this season has not quite gone to plan for the young British rider.

Havelock said: “Jason’s beating himself up because he’s not winning races sometimes but I told him you won’t score big points every time you go to a track because it’s Elite League racing against some of the top riders in the world.

“It’s unfortunate with Jason; he’s very hard on himself when he doesn’t score a load of points and it isn’t always his fault.”

Earlier this season Bees chose to use guest riders when Stuart Robson was out injured rather than put pressure on the reserves by using the rider replacement facility.

“When Robbo was out Mick Horton wanted to use rider replacement but I said to him ‘you can’t because you’re putting too much pressure on the reserves’ with the fact when Robbo was out only Joonas Kylmakorpi could take one ride and then it was the reserves.

“To put that much pressure on with the guests we chose it happened to be the right ones at the right time for that particular track.

“The fast-track lads are there for one reason; they are there to try and learn and improve because if you put too much pressure on them you’re just going to destroy them.”

Bees head to Lakeside tomorrow looking to replicate their last visit to the Arena-Essex Raceway when they won 56-39 in August last year.

Havelock added: “It’s always going to be tough at Lakeside but when we’re on form and the boys are on it we can go to any track and team in the country and give them a run for their money.

“We showed it at other places this season we can do it so it’s all in our hands really; if we turn up on Friday in the right frame of mind we will get points I’m convinced of that.”
