Wasps Netball star Greenway announces retirement after Superleague triumph

NETBALL: TAMSIN Greenway ended her playing career on a high at the Barclaycard Arena after announcing her retirement from Netball following Wasps Netball’s Vitality Superleague championship win.

Greenway’s team defeated Loughborough Lightning to secure the championship in a hotly-contested Grand Final which went down to the wire.

Wasps lifted the trophy less than 12 months after forming.

The 34-year-old left Surrey Storm at the end of last season to take up the role of Director of Netball at Wasps, and this year’s title win marks the third successive Superleague title she has won.

Reflecting on the year, Greenway admits Wasps had ‘huge pressure’ on their shoulders all season.

She said: “To go out and win the title and to perform like we did I couldn’t be any prouder.

“The last 10 months have been absolutely madness.

“This title really is pretty special.

“Right from the word go we focused on getting the culture right and making sure we knew how our team wanted to play

“We have had a special group of players here this season.

“We’ve come so far, it was us against the world in the final and that’s how it had been all season long.

“Everyone looked at the player list and thought we had just took the best players but there was so much more to it than that, to get them playing as a team and build this whole new brand.

“It’s been a rollercoaster, it’s been really really tough but I wouldn’t change the journey we have been on for the world.”

Greenway started the season as coach, but injuries within the Wasps team forced her to come out of retirement and make her return to the course.

She ended the season playing every minute of the Grand Final, but she quickly announced her retirement after the game – announcing ‘that is it’.

The Leicester-born forward said: “I’ve loved it but it’s time for me to step-away, we have some amazing players coming through and hopefully next year it will be a lot smoother.

“I’m not on the reserve list, I’m not going near a gym and I’m not going near a netball dress.”

The season has also seen Wasps Netball’s development teams enjoy huge success, with the Under 21s team winning their league and U19s side finishing third.

Greenway said: “Our future is bright.

“I am genuinely excited about what we can pull together for next season.

“I’ve been doing this for too long and know it has to be about the journey, it has to be a bigger picture and making sure you take the right steps to get there.

“You have to look at our fans too, they have supported all season long, all across the country and were there again when it mattered, they pushed us over the line to win the title.

“We have really started to change the face of netball, the team believed in me and we all believed in this team.

“We will rebuild, we’ll go again and make this club hungry for more.”
