NETBALL: WASPS Netball will begin their Vitality Netball Superleague title defence in front of a sell-out home crowd this weekend.
Tamsin Greenway’s team face Surrey Storm at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, February 10, (7pm), in what will be their first fixture of the 2018 season.
Wasps Netball and Storm shared the spoils last year, both securing one win each in their two meetings.
Storm missed out on a top four finish, while Wasps Netball went on to finish second and eventually beat Loughborough Lightning in the Grand Final to take home the Superleague trophy in their debut season.
Wasps Netball have brought in a host of new names over the summer to help with the push to regain their title, including England Roses star Jade Clarke and South African international goal attack Renske Stoltz.
Wasps Director of Netball Greenway knows they will be the team to beat this season and is relishing the challenge.
She said: “Coming into the league last year and going all the way was a fairytale and now we know that we are the team that everyone wants to beat this season.
“This match against Storm has become a bit of a rivalry for us, it’s a big game that will provide us with a tough test.
“The competition is massive for the top four spots this year, we’re really happy to be starting at home at the Ricoh Arena in-front of a sell-out crowd.
“You want to start your season against the best and we will certainly be doing that when we take on Storm.”
Wasps Netball mid-court star Amy Flanagan has praised the fans at the Ricoh Arena and says Storm will provide a big test for the team.
Flanagan said: “We’re always learning as a group in training. I’m excited for the first game, we know that Storm play at a really high-level, they have great depth in their squad and will come to try and beat us.
“The fans at the Ricoh Arena were brilliant for us all of last season and we know they will be there again, to have a sell-out for the first game is fantastic.”
