FOOTBALL: BOTH of Coventry’s Midland League Premier Division clubs got their 2017 off to the worst possible start by tasting heavy defeats on Monday.
Sixth-placed Coventry United fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to Coleshill Town while Coventry Sphinx found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline at Loughborough University.
United had more time to prepare for Monday’s clash at Sphinx Drive after their trip to Westfields on December 30 had fallen victim to the cold weather.
But the home side found themselves 2-0 down at half-time after Jordan Nadat had fired Coleshill into a 33rd minute lead before Corey Currithers doubled the visitors’ advantage seven minutes before the break.
Coventry had it all to do when Mykel Beckley scored a third Coleshill goal in the 54th minute before Coventry gave themselves a lifeline when Ben Mackey found the back of the net shortly after the hour mark but it proved to be little more than a consolation goal.
Sphinx had made a positive start against Loughborough University and took a 15th minute lead through Callum Woodward who bundled the ball home from a corner.
But Loughborough completed a turnaround by scoring two goals in quick succession to lead 2-1 at half-time and two further goals in the second half sealed a comfortable victory for the home side.
Up next for Coventry United is a trip to Highgate United on Saturday while Coventry Sphinx host Shawbury United.
