ICE HOCKEY - Blaze claim fifth successive win against Panthers

Coventry Editorial 15th Mar, 2023   0

COVENTRY Blaze twice came from behind to beat Nottingham Panthers 4-2 and secure a fifth successive win in the Elite League.

David Clements and Johnny Curran twice drew Blaze level before Kim Tallberg and Nate Halbert struck in the final period to ensure Coventry continued their fine recent form at Motorpoint Arena.

The result means Blaze remain fifth in the Elite League table.

Blaze were without forward Colton Yellow Horn and defenceman Alexander Kuqali which allowed Miklós Rajna to back-up starter Paavo Holsa.

And the visitors started well as they forced Panthers netminder Peyton Jones into a number of saves before Halbert hit the pipes.

However, Nottingham took the lead at 7.05 when Tanner Sorenson’s shot found a way past a well screened Holsa.

Blaze levelled at 25.24 when defenceman Clements joined the offence and slid the puck through the five-hole of Jones.

The home side restored their lead at 29.40 when Jakub Ižacky scored on the powerplay.

Danny Stewart’s side equalised for a second time at 37.20 as Curran registered his 20th goal of the season.

And top scorer Tallberg completed the turnaround at 47.38 with his 29th goal of the campaign.

Nottingham pulled Jones for an extra skater in the final few minutes and Halbert took full advantage to seal the win at 58.45 with a strike from distance.

Blaze face Dundee Stars in a double header this weekend with the face-off at the Skydome Arena to take place at 7pm on Saturday, March 18 and 5pm at Dundee Ice Arena on Sunday, March 19.
