ICE HOCKEY - Blaze snap losing streak with Glasgow win

COVENTRY Blaze snapped their three-game losing streak with a dramatic overtime win against Glasgow Clan having been beaten at Fife Flyers the previous night.

Blaze edged out Clan through Johnny Curran’s second goal of the game in overtime having thrown away a first period lead in defeat at Fife.

The results mean Blaze sit fourth in the Elite League standings, five points behind leaders Guildford Flames.

Blaze fell behind at home to Glasgow at the Skydome Arena as Gary Haden opened the scoring at 1.59 before Mitch Cook levelled at 9.58 past Clan netminder John Muse who made a staggering 54 saves on the night.

However, Haden scored his second goal at 22.53 before Curran once again drew Blaze level at 25.34 on the powerplay.

Blaze took the lead at 47.06 through Jack Billings goal only for Clan to equalise through defenceman Mitch Jones at 48.13 to send the game to overtime.

And Curran grabbed his second of the night to seal the win whilst captain Nate Halbert had a first assist on all four Blaze goals.

Head Coach Danny Stewart said: “I want to give credit to that Glasgow team. I know how banged up they are right now, and we felt it was a game we should likely have won given the line-up they were icing.

“But, we have been on the other side of things when we have been short benched before and it can galvanise a group together.

“So fair play to them, they made it tough for us, but I was happy with the discipline we showed and the result.”

That came after Coventry were beaten 5-3 by Fife Flyers in Scotland at the Fife Ice Arena.

And Blaze raced into a two-goal lead as Peyton Frantti and David Clements struck at 8.46 and 14.33.

Former Coventry forward Janne Laakkonen reduced the deficit at 17.24 on the powerplay only for Blaze to restore their two-goal advantage just 30 seconds later through Colton Yellow Horn.

The home side responded through Zack Phillips with 38 seconds remaining of the first period before Jonas Emmerdahl levelled at 24.49.

And Fife completed an impressive turnaround at 58.28 as Mikael Johansson beat Paavo Holsa with the home side’s second powerplay goal of the night.

Blaze pulled Holsa for an extra skater late on but were unable to find an equaliser as Laakkonen wrapped up the points for Flyers with his second of the game into the empty net at 59.32.

Coventry are next in Elite League action at home to Dundee Stars on Sunday, October 30 with the face-off at 5.30pm at the Skydome Arena.
