ICE HOCKEY - Coventry Blaze confirm double goalie signing

COVENTRY Blaze have confirmed the double goalie signing of Mat Robson and Cam Gray.

Canadian netminder Robson has played in the AHL, DEL, ECHL, France and most recently in Poland while American Gray spent the last two seasons in the ECHL with Indy Fuel.

Robson and Gray join British netminder Will Bray in completing Blaze’s goalkeeper ranks for the 2024/25 season.

Blaze head coach Kevin Moore said: “Mat is a big goalie who moves smoothly around his crease and tracks down on pucks. Off the rush he anticipates the play extremely well and in zone he can play low to high situations squarely. In the locker room Mat adds daily competitiveness and will be a great addition to our club and goalie group.

“Cam is someone who knows how to win games in a variety of ways. He is technically sound and extremely quick laterally. He comes in and out of his posts with ease, controlling the play in zone. Off the rush he understands gap control as good as anyone and can make the net seem small while the play comes at him.

“In the locker room Cam adds daily professionalism and attention to detail and will be a great addition to our team and goalie trio.”

Robson stands at an imposing 6ft 3in tall and spent the second half of last season with Cracovia Krakow where he ended the campaign with a stunning performance in the play-offs posting a .944 save-percentage and 2.18 goals-against-average (GAA) over seven games.

The 28-year-old was signed a sought-after college free agents by the NHL’s Minnesota Wild following an impressive time in the NCAA with University of Minnesota (2017-2019).

In his senior, he was one of three finalists for the Big Ten Goalie of the Year and his career save-percentage of .924 set a new program record for the Gophers.

After attending the Wild’s training camp and playing in exhibition, Robson spent the 2019/20 season in the AHL, posting a .901 save-percentage 2.97 goals-against-average and in 26 appearances for the Iowa Wild.

He then opted to move to one of Europe’s top leagues, the DEL with Straubing Tigers for 2020/21 before catching the attention of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, and spending 2021/22 in their system with the AHL’s Rochester American’s and Cincinnati Cyclones.

In 2022/23, Robson again moved to Europe playing 38 times for Anglet of the Ligue Magnus in France.

Gray, who stands at 6ft tall, joins the club following two seasons in the ECHL with Indy Fuel.

The 27-year-old earned a try-out with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs and spent time in the SPHL with Macon Mayhem during his time with Indy Fuel.

Before turning professional, Gray was a stand-out at Adrian College (NCAA III) and led the Bulldogs to the program’s first National Championship in 2022.

In three seasons with Adrian, Gray posted a 53-9-2 record with a .912 save-percentage and 2.34 goals-against-average (GAA), including an undefeated season in 2021/22, going 23-0-0 with a .913 save-percentage and 2.23 GAA.
