JOHNNY Curran marked his return to Coventry Blaze with an overtime winner in the club’s 2-1 victory at Dundee Stars.
Curran struck 1.39 into the additional period to seal the win for Blaze at Dundee Ice Arena after Kobe Roth cancelled out Brent Beaudoin’s opener in the second period.
However, Blaze slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against Manchester Storm the following night despite Curran putting Coventry ahead in the second period at the Skydome Arena.
The results mean Blaze sit sixth in the Elite League standings.
Following a goalless first period against Dundee, Stars took the lead at 20.15 when Beaudoin turned Anthony Rinaldi’s rebounded shot into the net.
Blaze netminder Nolan Kent made a remarkable 38 saves throughout the course of the evening to keep his side in the contest before Roth’s tip on the powerplay at 36.55 drew Coventry level.
With neither team able to find a winner, the game went to overtime as Curran duly scored the decisive goal with a sensational solo effort to mark a dream return to Blaze.
However, Blaze suffered a narrow defeat against Storm on home ice despite Curran breaking the deadlock in the second period at 37.13.
Manchester responded just 15 seconds later when Michael Korol finished neatly from Johnny Corneil’s stretch pass when one-on-one with Blaze netminder Taran Kozun.
And Storm completed the turnaround at 52.03 as Zack Phillips forced the puck over the line from Chase Harrison’s pass.
Blaze are next in action at home to Fife Flyers on Sunday, January 14 with the face-off at 5.30pm at the Skydome.
