ICE HOCKEY - Venus to leave Blaze after 12 seasons at the Skydome

ROSS Venus has decided to pursue other opportunities, both on and off the ice, at the end of the current Elite League season, bringing an end to his 12-season stint with Coventry Blaze.

The British forward has made more than 700 Elite League competition appearances for Blaze with the 28-year-old a product of the club’s academy.

He made his professional debut in the 2010/11 season and ranks second only to Russell Cowley for all-time games played.

During his time with the club, Venus contributed nearly 300 points, was an associate captain for four seasons and developed into one of the most reliable two-way players in the Elite League.

Venus said: “I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey that I have had with the Blaze.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without all the support from everyone involved, inside and outside the team. This club has been my entire adult life. I came here as a young boy and grew up as a part of this club.

“I am proud to say that I have given my everything to this team during my time here, but it is now time for me to move on and pursue other opportunities.

“I will always remember with immense pride and happiness my years with the Blaze.”

Head Coach Danny Stewart said: “Ross has had a phenomenal career. He has been a Blaze guy through and through. Came up as a young kid and bought his time with patience and perseverance.

“He has just got better every season that I have had him as a player. Early days he played a pretty specific role as a defensive forward, but has evolved and we have seen his offensive abilities shine through the past couple seasons.

“He has been among the top scoring British players over the past several seasons and has played a key role in our success.

“He has been through many ups and downs for this organisation and played for many coaches. He got a taste of winning in 2015 and I would love to see him raise a trophy one last time as a member of this club.

“I wish him and Gala the very best in their next chapter and V will leave this club as one of the all-time greatest servants and players.”

Venus celebrated a testimonial season with Blaze in 2019/20 and his game-winning goal in the 2015 Elite League Playoff Final against Sheffield Steelers will be remembered fondly by all at the club.

On the international stage, Venus has proudly represented Great Britain multiple times including in the World Championships and in Olympic Qualifying.

He hopes to earn a place in the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship – Division I Group A squad which will play Italy, Lithuania, Korea, Poland and Romania in Nottingham from Saturday, April 29 to Friday, May 5.
