JUDO - Giles wins bronze in Tashkent

CHELSIE Giles claimed her second Grand Slam medal of the year after winning bronze in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

After winning silver in Paris in her first outing of the year, the Coventry judoka overcame UAE’s Khorloodoi Bishrelt to claim bronze in the Tashkent Grand Slam.

In the bronze medal contest, Giles picked up two early shidos only for the penalty count to even up during golden score.

And, after Bishrelt picked up another shido, Giles took home the bronze medal.

Giles entered the competition at the second round stage as she defeated India’s Shraddha Kadubal Chopade before then dispatching China’s Yeqing Zhu to reach the quarter-finals.

However, Giles came unstuck against Asian junior champion Gulkhayo Juraeva who would go on to claim silver.

That meant Giles progressed to the repechage as she registered an ippon score with an O-uchi-gari to advance to the bronze medal contest with a golden score victory against Cyprus’s Sofia Asvesta.
