FOOTBALL: ALVIS Sporting moved six points clear at the top of the Midland League Division Two after recording a comfortable 3-0 victory over Leamington Hibernian.
Seeking a ninth consecutive league victory, Alvis made easy work of their first trip to Leamington Hibernian and took the lead after jsut three minutes.
Dildale Linton advanced down the left was brought down just inside the penalty area and captain Michael Quirke made no mistake from the penalty spot.
On a difficult pitch Alvis were the dominant force and, despite a fine all round display by David Tonks in midfield with general awareness and precise passing, Alvis were unable to breach the Leamington rearguard again until 71 minutes.
Following a right wing corner which was not cleared, the ball came out to Daniel Pidgeon who scored with a low hard drive from 20 yards.
With just five minutes remaining Charlie Cook, who had only been on the field a few minutes as a substitute, took advantage of a defensive mix up to move across the penalty area and neatly score from eight yards out.
“It was pleasing to start the New Year with a win, and to be fair to Leamington Hibernian, they never gave up,” said Alvis Sporting boss Damian Cassidy.
“Certainly it was a poor pitch which made it difficult to play attractive football at times. It was pleasing to be able to field almost our full team again in what is a good squad of players.”
Alvis Sporting are due to celebrate the opening of their seated grandstand this Saturday when they entertain Paget Rangers at Green Lane.
