Let's stick together, is Coventry boss Robins' promotion message

SKY Blues boss Mark Robins and his team spoke of the club’s players and fans being re-united this season after Monday’s first promotion in 51 years in front of 38,000 joyous supporters.

The manager – promoted for the first time in his career in his second spell at the club – also spoke of avoiding “resting on our laurels”, as he called for everyone connected with the club to kick on in League One next season.

He said after the sensational 3-1 romp over Exeter City in the blistering Wembley heat, after rare and spectacular goals from Jordan Willis, Jordan Shipley and Jack Grimmer: “That was absolutely outstanding. Phenomenal.

“We knew that the heat would play its part. We had the advantage of watching the last two promotion finals so we knew it was going to be a game of two halves – and so it proved to be.

“The goals were excellent. The way that Jordan Willis peeled off. He turned like a striker and finished it like one too. It was outstanding.

“For the second goal, everything went our way. Shipley has found a burst of energy and done really well from McNulty’s pass.

“Then we sort of knew. We knew we were on top and we knew it was going to be our day.

“So, when Grimmer gets the ball and bends one in with his left it felt like it was written in the stars.”

“The atmosphere today was outstanding. I am hoping everybody goes out and renews their season tickets now because they are magnificent.

“They are always behind the team and the staff. The reconnection (between the players and fans) has been so good and brilliant to see.

“This club is fantastic. This is my second time here. When I left this club it was difficult and it was the hardest professional decision I have ever had to make.”

He added: “Coming back was an easy one because it was horrendous to see this club struggling last season and now we have got promoted in the way that everybody wants to do it.”
