LIVE: Coventry City vs Charlton Athletic

Coventry Editorial 14th Apr, 2017 Updated: 14th Apr, 2017   0

IT may well be the bank holiday weekend, but there’s little rest time for the Sky Blues as they face Charlton Athletic at the Ricoh Arena this afternoon.

A win is needed by Mark Robins’ side if they are to avoid relegation from League One today.

FULL TIME: Coventry City 1-1 Charlton Athletic.

’90 – Corner to the Sky Blues. Results in nothing. Burge is forced to run back to his goal as went up for the corner. 1-1.

’86 – Free kick in a dangerous area for Coventry. Thomas’ strike way over the bar though. 1-1.

’84 – City looking tired in places as Charlton now appear the much better team. Forster-Caskay forces Burge into a good save from close range with a powerful shot. 1-1.

’78 – Few chances for both teams in the last ten minutes. Coventry pressed hard for a second goal ten minutes ago but Charlton seemed to have weathered the storm. Break in play as Haynes received attention on pitch. 1-1.

SUBSTITUTION: Jodi Jones off for the Sky Blues. On comes Kyel Reid. 16 minutes left at the Ricoh. 1-1.

SUBSTITUTION: Jordan Willis is replaced by Kevin Foley for Coventry. 1-1.

’69 – Quick thinking passing from City allows George Thomas a clear chance on goal. Unlucky not to score. Rudd makes himself as big as possible to make the crucial save. 1-1.

’64 – Jones with a huge shot from the left. His effort his saved. The rebound hits George Thomas quick time, he can’t quite direct his effort goalwards. Coventry really pressing hard. You can sense this game won’t end 1-1. Fans right behind the team.

’61 – Willis’ cross almost finds Kwame Thomas in the centre. Ball headered clear of the 18-yard box though. Jones then controls the ball. His effort is deflected for a corner. 1-1.

’59 – A Coventry fan attempts to header the ball back onto the field. It’s an awful header. Charlton man Ricky Holmes cracks a smile and jokes with the fan. Amid the on field rivalry that’s great to see. Don’t see it much in football. 1-1.

GOAL! Charlton equalise through Patrick Baeur. Corner ball is not cleared by City defence. Bauer connects and beats Burge. 1-1.

’52 – Huge chance for Thomas to double his tally today. Bigirimana sends a cracking ball from the half way line. Thomas goes one on one but Rudd makes himself big and forces the save.

Seconds later Jones is sent through by Lameiras. Jones and K.Thomas go two on one. Jones’ shot goes wide. 1-0.

’50 – Another positive start for the Sky Blues. George Thomas sends a ball wide to Jodi Jones who advances with speed. His cross is a good one but no one can get a touch to score from close range. Let off for Charlton. 1-0.

’48 – George Thomas takes a corner for the Sky Blues. Kwame Thomas gets a touch at the near post. Incredibly the ball evades everyone else. Charlton then handed a free kick following a foul. 1-0.

SECOND HALF: Underway for the second half. Kwame Thomas comes on for Stuart Beavon. 1-0.

HALF TIME: Coventry 1-0 Charlton Athletic

’45 – Pressure from Charlton towards the end of the half. Ricky Holmes delivering multiple crossed. City dealing with them all though. 1-0.

’36 – Jones with a superb effort from 25 yards out. He shoots and Rudd is stretched to his limit to make a diving low save to his right. 1-0.

’34 – Charlton being forced back into their own half on multiple occasions when attacking. City midfield and defence doing a great job. Meanwhile City break with Beavon who plays the ball to Jones. Jones crosses but it finds no one. Bigirimana then shoots from range but Rudd makes the save. 1-0.

’27 – Great play by Thomas who has endured a tricky first half. He runs goalwards from the corner flag and forces a corner.

CITY GOAL! Taken short. Ball played out to Stevenson on the edge of the box. His shot is blocked. The ball pings around the area but George Thomas gets his laces through one shot and City lead. Scrappy, but a goal’s a goal. City 1-0 Charlton.

’25 – Quiet few moments of play. Charlton enjoying more possession now than at any other point in the game. Struggling to break down City’s back four though. 0-0.

’19 – CROSSBAR: Charlton go extremely close to taking the lead. Byrne is waiting in the middle and gets onto the end of Dasilva’s cross from the left. Byrne’s header beats Burge and slams off the crossbar. 0-0.

’16 – Slight let off for Coventry. Free kick inside City’s half is headered goalwards by Andrew Crofts. Header deflected, though Crofts unaware the ball is still in play. Beavon eventually clears. 0-0.

’12 – Smart play by Coventry who are enjoying most of the attacking time this game has offered so far. Willis runs from Coventry’s end to send George Thomas into the box. The youngster shoots but it’s wide. He’s called for being offside too. 0-0.

’10 – Poor pass in midfield from George Thomas. Nathan Byrne breaks for Charlton but his cross is long and far. Goal kick for Coventry. 0-0.

‘6 – Haynes battles tremendously hard down the left to see off two Charlton men. Passes the ball back to Jones who cuts into the box. Shoots, shot saved. Rebound cleared by Charlton. Big chance for City. 0-0.

‘3 – Willis sends a ball towards the box from the right. Beavon almost gets on the end of the pass but not quite. Rain falling here. Pitch slippy. Several basic errors made between both teams so far. 0-0.

3.13pm – Back underway at the Ricoh. 0-0.

‘0.10 – Seconds into the game and more pigs thrown onto the pitch by protestors in the far corner of the stadium from our view. Another stoppage. 0-0.

KICK OFF – Eventually we’re underway here at the Ricoh Arena! 0-0.

3.05pm – Kick off delayed here as some fans throw ‘pigs’ onto the pitch. Others patiently waiting for kick off to be called.

3pm – Kick off time has approached and the crowd have just welcomed the teams out on the pitch so a slight delay. Kick off coming up! It’s Coventry vs Charlton.

2.55pm – Crowd beginning to grow now. Kick off just minutes away. A must win game for the Sky Blues if they are to avoid relegation today.

We’re experiencing some technical issues here at the Ricoh with the wifi currently down. A trusty 4G service will have to do!
