EXPERIENCED former Brighton, Southampton and Sheffield United midfielder Dean Hammond is on trial with Coventry City, we have learned.
Sky Blues’ boss Rusell Slade is running the rule over the free agent in training today.
It is in addition to the midfielder and striker Slade is hoping to close in on today with the transfer window deadline looming tonight.
Hammond, aged 33, left Sheffield United last year.
His list of previous clubs also include Leyton Orient and Colchester United.
As we reported earlier this morning, our club sources have told us deals for the two players are progressing, but nothing is certain.
If both players are secured, it is expected that would complete incoming transfer activity today.
We do not know on what terms either player would be brought in – whether on a permanent deal or on loan.
Plan B could be deployed this afternoon if the two deals do not get over the line.
Contrary to rumours, captain Jordan Willis’s departure to Rotherham today is not a fait accompli, say our sources, and he was at Ryton training ground as normal this morning.
So too were the other young stars who have been the subject of bids and interest – Ben Stevenson, Ryan Haynes and Cian Harris.
We revealed yesterday Championship side Wolves had made an offer for attacking full-back Ryan Haynes, but that had been rejected.
We also confirmed that, as of yesterday, there had been no third offer for midfielder Ben Stevenson. That remains the case as of mid-morning today, club sources told us.
Sky Blues club captain Willis had been the subject of two offers from Rotherham, we confirmed yesterday, which were rejected because they did not meet the Sky Blues’ valuation for him.
Tottenham Hotspur yesterday made enquiries about looking at Cian Harries for a trial period, after the 19-year-old earlier this month had trials at Liverpool. That approach was rejected.
