A RACING driver from Coventry has made history after winning a prestigious British karting title.
Dhian Singh Pahal has become the first Sikh driver to win the Wera Tools British MicroMax Kart Championship.
The 11-year-old will now represent Team UK at the prestigious Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals (RMCGF) in Bahrain next month.
The international event brings together 400 drivers from over 60 countries.
Dhian achieved his place at the international event after taking a dramatic victory in the final round of the British MicroMax Kart Championship at the Paul Fletcher International (PFI) kart circuit in Grantham, Lincolnshire.
The young driver entered the final weekend of the season some 15 points behind the championship leader.
He began the weekend with two commanding wins in the heats.
However, a technical disqualification in the final wiped out his points to leave his title hopes hanging in the balance.
Dhian recovered to win both heats the following day and needed another win in the final, along with his opponent to finish fourth, to claim the title.
And Dhian executed a late overtake to take the race win and clinch the title by a single point.
Before the final race, Dhian said: “It’s been the hardest weekend of my life. I’m going to need all of the strength I can get.”
Dhian raced with the Khanda – the sacred Sikh symbol – displayed on his helmet and a photo of his late grandmother on his kart and rib protector.
He now heads to Bahrain to compete in the RMCGF from November 29 to December 6.
