Coventry Editorial 30th May, 2022   0

OCTAVIAN Droobers Orienteering Club are staging an event in Coventry which forms part of a weekend of orienteering along with Birmingham.

The events take place on June 18 and 19 and form part of the European wide series of ‘City Race Euro Tour’ with further events taking place in Lisbon, Leiria, Antwerp, Basle, Graz, Stockholm and Gdansk.

And the event in Coventry on Saturday, June 18 will take place at Coventry University Sports Centre.

Organiser Phil Kirk will be welcoming international and UK orienteerers and athletes from 75 clubs, with an age range of eight to 85-years-old.

The event has also been awarded national status and will form part of the UK Orienteering Urban League.

And the club have praised the tremendous support they have received from organisations in Coventry including Coventry University and Coventry City Council.

Competitors will be navigating to strategically placed control points on features such as buildings, statues, trees, fences and benches.

A specially drawn and very detailed large-scale map showing all streets and buildings around the centre of Coventry has been produced.

These maps will be issued to each competitor, along with electronic timers at pre-allocated start times from 11am until 1pm.

The map for each course shows the control points competitors need to visit in the right order and the club has introduced two special Explorer courses for those who wish to enjoy a tourist trail taking in the medieval history and stunning modern sculptures around Coventry City centre.

The Birmingham City event takes place on Sunday, June 19 with full details about both events and how to enter available at: www.heartofenglandurban.site

For details on how to take part in orienteering, a fun outdoor active sport ideal for beginners, runners and families of all ages visit the club website at: www.octaviandroobers.org or email: [email protected] or contact Karin Kirk on: 01926 632189.
