PPG outcome and Midland Football League promotion for Coventry United would be "deserved", says Anderson

A DECISION to decide the Midland Football League campaign on a points-per-game basis would be a fair outcome, says Coventry United boss Terry Anderson.

With non-league clubs nationwide still coming to terms with the Football Association’s decision to bring the 2020/21 campaign to an early close – the second season in succession not to have been completed – the subsequent ramifications in regards to promotion and relegation between divisions are now being questioned.

For Anderson – who has had the Red and Greens challenging at the top end of the table in recent seasons, and guided the club to a clear lead on top of the Premier Division tree before the 2019/20 campaign concluded – there is a clear answer to deciding how leagues shape up for the 2021/22 term.

“As it stands, the final standings are up in the air, but I’ve heard rumours the table could be decided on a points-per-game basis,” he said.

“Right now it’s a waiting game. PPG would of course be a satisfactory conclusion for us, given the amount of hard work everyone has put in over the last two seasons.

“As this would likely result in promotion for us, I’m incredibly proud of our unbeaten run over the previous two seasons and I feel promotion is nothing less than we deserve for our efforts.

“However, if the season is null and voided, we will prepare for another Midland Football League campaign the best we can – to ensure progression to Step Four next year.”

And while the kick-off date for the new season on the first or second weekend of August is still months away, it has been difficult for clubs to begin putting preparations in place when the grassroots game does eventually resume – Coventry United being no exception to the rule.

“As it stands, our preparations are somewhat in the air as we don’t know where we will be playing next season,” Anderson added.

“We could be playing in Step Four against teams we’ve never encountered before, or we may be back in an increasingly strong MFL Premier Division for another scintillating battle.

“Whatever happens, myself and my staff will continue to strive towards the best squad we can to ensure the best possible opportunity for success.”
