RUGBY UNION - Coventry climb table after win at Caldy

Coventry Editorial 1st Nov, 2022   0

COVENTRY RFC secured a third successive win thanks to two tries from Shea Cornish in a 27-18 victory away at Caldy.

Cornish struck twice in the first half, despite being sent to the sin bin early on, whilst Suva Ma’asi and Will Rigg also crossed for tries at Paton Field.

The result means Coventry now sit third in the RFU Championship table and are behind only Ealing Trailfinders and Jersey Reds.

Coventry took the lead inside the first minute when Pat Pellegrini’s kicked a penalty before Ben Jones responded with a penalty of his own.

The game burst into life on 11 minutes when Cornish was sent to the sin bin for pushing a player off the ball which led to a tackle in the air.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Coventry scored the game’s first try when Ma’asi benefitted from a well-constructed driving maul to score.

And Cornish scored on his return to the field when he received a stunning offload, out the back of the hand, from former Caldy man Lucas Titherington to score in the corner with Pat Pellegrini adding the extras.

The wing scored his second double in as many games on the half-hour mark when a clever lineout allowed Cornish to show-and-go as he sprinted to the line to dot down and hand Coventry a 17-point lead at the break.

And the visitors extended their lead early in the second period when Rigg charged his way through several defenders to the line after Will Chudley’s excellent 50:22 kick as Pellegrini added the extras.

Caldy finally grabbed their first try through JJ Dickinson on 52 minutes before Elliot Gourlay scored two tries late on when Coventry had two players in the sin bin.

Coventry are next in action away at Doncaster on Saturday, November 5 in the Championship Cup with kick-off at 2.30pm at Castle Park.
