RUGBY UNION - Coventry ease to Hartpury win

Coventry Editorial 4th Apr, 2023   0

WILL Chudley crossed twice as Coventry RFC eased to a 42-19 bonus point win against Hartpury University as Alex Rae’s side secured a third successive victory.

Chudley touched down in both halves as James Kenny, Tom Dodd, James Tyas and Louis Brown all crossed for tries under the lights at Butts Park Arena.

The result means Coventry stay third in the RFU Championship table.

And the home side made a blistering start as Exeter Chiefs loanee Kenny ran onto Chudley’s pass at pace to cross for the game’s first try on four minutes as Evan Mitchell kicked the extras.

Coventry scored a quickfire second on seven minutes when Chudley raced under the sticks and Mitchell converted after Will Rigg picked a smart line in midfield and produced a fine offload.

However, Hartpury responded with their first try on 13 minutes as Oliver Robinson touched down following a clever routine from a driving maul which fooled the Coventry defence as Thomas Mathews converted.

Rae’s men struck again on 24 minutes as Dodd slid in to score under pressure from several Hartpury defenders as Mitchell nailed the conversion.

The visitors hit back before half time when Harry Short popped up with the ball after Hartpury produced another textbook driving maul and Mathews converted.

Coventry asserted their dominance at the start of the second period as Chudley scored his second try of the night on 42 minutes from James Martin’s inside ball, converted by Mitchell.

The home side crossed again on 49 minutes as Tyas crept over the whitewash following a series of pick and go moves as Mitchell stayed perfect from the kicking tee.

And Brown scored Coventry’s final try on 71 minutes when he squeezed through a gap to dot down as Mitchell kicked the extras to finish with a 12-point individual haul.

Hartpury grabbed a consolation try at the death through Joe Howard but it proved too little too late as Coventry extended their unbeaten run at home to seven matches.

Coventry are next in action away at Ampthill on Saturday, April 8 with kick-off at 2pm at Dillingham Park.
