RUGBY UNION - Coventry put Knights to the sword in easy Cup win

Coventry Editorial 6th Feb, 2023   0

TOBI Wilson scored a debut try as Coventry RFC eased to a 42-12 win against Doncaster Knights in the Championship Cup to avenge their defeat to the same opponents earlier in the competition.

Wilson scored Coventry’s first try before Will Lane, Lucas Titherington, Jake Bridges and Toby Trinder all crossed at Butts Park Arena.

The result means Coventry have won two and lost two of their four Championship Cup matches this season to sit second in Pool B, four points behind the Knights.

Doncaster beat Coventry 22-7 back in the opening Championship Cup game back in November and went into last weekend’s clash with a perfect record after three matches.

And the visitors made a blistering start as prop Karl Garside forced his way over from close range for the opening try on three minutes with Billy McBryde kicking the extras.

However, Coventry responded just five minutes later when Wilson finished under the posts after running a brilliant support line to receive Lane’s pass with Evan Mitchell converting.

And the home side completed the turnaround on 28 minutes when Lane made an excellent snipe for the line and Mitchell added the extras after a series of strong carries from the forward pack.

Coventry stretched their lead soon after when Doncaster were adjudged to have collapsed a powerful rolling maul illegally with the home side awarded a penalty try and Knights player Martin Sigren sent to the sin bin.

And Alex Rae’s side made the extra man count when Titherington was put through a gap in the Doncaster defence from Suva Ma’asi pass to score Coventry’s bonus point try with Mitchell converting.

The visitors scored their second try on the hour mark as Will Holling emerged with the ball underneath a mass of bodies following a rolling maul as McBryde’s conversion drifted wide.

However, Coventry produced another quick response to score just six minutes later as Bridges powered over from close range, after several phases, and Mitchell made no mistake from the kicking tee.

There was still time for Coventry to score one final try, with the clock in the red, as Trinder barged his way over at the base of post and Mitchell added the extras to complete a perfect afternoon with the boot.

Coventry continue their Championship Cup campaign at home to Bedford Blues on Saturday, February 11 with kick-off at 3pm at Butts Park Arena.
