COVENTRY RFC completed an impressive double over Doncaster Knights with a 27-12 victory at Castle Park.
Inspired by an outstanding effort at the scrum, tries from Tom Ball and Tom Hitchcock and 10 points from the boot of Pat Pellegrini sealed a fine win in South Yorkshire.
The result means Coventry sit third in the Championship table.
Cov dominated possession in the first half without creating a clear-cut try-scoring opportunity as Pellegrini kicked a penalty on 13 minutes to put the visitors ahead.
And the away side eventually crossed for the game’s first try on 38 minutes when Ball strolled in under the posts after an excellent break from Pellegrini who added the extras.
Leading by 10 points at the break, Pellegrini kicked a simple penalty early in the second half to stretch Coventry’s advanatge.
And Cov’s dominance at the set-piece saw the visitors win a couple of penalties close to Doncaster line before the referee awarded the away side a penalty try with Knight prop Corrie Barrett sent to the sin bin.
The home side finally troubled the scoreboard on 66 minutes as Billy McBryde crossed from a lineout maul and Russell Bennett kicked the extras.
Cov lost Ryan Hutler to the sin bin soon after before Knights replacement Nathan Greenwood won a 70-metre foot race to touch down with two minutes left to play.
However, Alex Rae’s side scored the game’s final try with the last play as Hitchcook touched down his first try for the club after gathering a loose ball inside Doncaster’s 22 with Pellegrini converting.
Coventry are next in action at home to league leaders Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday, March 9 with kick-off at 2.30pm at Butts Park Arena.
