TAIO Varndell scored a debut try as Coventry Rugby cruised to a 54-29 bonus point victory at London Scottish.

Senior academy prospect Varndell came off the bench to mark his Coventry debut with a try at the Richmond Athletic Ground.

Tries from Jack Shine, Jordon Poole, Josh Barton and Morgan Strong secured a bonus point for the visitors before half time.

And Dan Green, Tom Bacon, Varndell and Jack Reeves crossed after the break in a eight-try win while Tommy Mathews kicked seven conversions.

The result means Coventry sit fourth in the Champ Rugby table, three points behind Worcester Warriors in second.

Alex Rae’s side scored the game’s first try on 15 minutes when Shine dotted down after Matt Johnson won a high ball and Aristot Benz-Salomon and Mathews moved the ball quickly through the hands.

However, London responded four minutes later as Harry Clayton powered over from close range after the home side kicked a penalty to the corner.

Coventry extended their lead on 23 minutes when Poole broke away following a scrum penalty to dot down .

The visitors scored a third try on 37 minutes as Barton reacted quickest to a quick tap penalty to touch down after London had Bailey Ransom sent to the sin-bin for persistent infringements.

And Coventry scored their bonus point try on the stroke of half time when Strong finished from Poole’s offload to send the away side into the break with a commanding 21-point lead.

The home side had a second player sent to the sin-bin just two minutes into the second half as Will Prior received a yellow card.

And the visitors made the most of the extra man as Green dotted down on 44 minutes from close range.

Scottish scored a second try just three minutes later courtesy of Ransom only for Bacon to score Coventry’s sixth try in a frantic start to the second period.

The tries continued to flow as Tom Wilstead crossed for Scottish on 54 minutes from close range.

London further reduced the deficit on 69 minutes when Clayton crossed for his second try of the game to secure a bonus point for the home side.

A special moment arrived on 71 minutes as replacement Varndell picked up a loose ball inside his own 22 and sprinted to the line to score a try under the posts on his senior debut.

Scottish crossed again five minutes later when Vaughan Bentley dotted down after Eliot Salt saw yellow for Coventry moments earlier.

However, the visitors scored the game’s final try at the death as Reeves weaved his way past several defenders to score a fine solo try.

Coventry are next in action against Caldy on Saturday, April 4 with kick-off at 3pm at the Nick Newbold Stadium.
