ALEX Rae says ‘he would have bitten your hand off’ to start the season with five consecutive wins following Coventry Rugby’s hard-fought victory against Caldy.
Cov maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a 17-15 success at bottom club Caldy as Liam Richman kicked a late penalty at Paton Field.
And after cementing their place at the top of the Championship table, Rae praised his side’s ability to find a way to win to the match.
Rae said: “No matter what team we play in this league, we’ve got no God-given right to turn up and bank five points. Matt Kvesic just said to me he can’t remember the last time when it was so tight that we’ve had to kick a goal towards the end to win.
“These are all things we have to overcome and experiences for us to learn from. We have a lot of new players and if you’d offered before the season for us to be five-from-five at the start, I would have bitten your hand off.
“I’m obviously very happy to get away with a win.
“Fair play to Caldy, they’ve lost four games on the bounce at the start of this season but they put up a brilliant fight and dragged us into the trenches. They slowed the game down and made it a real old-school battle so they deserve loads of credit.
“But so do our lads – that’s exactly the kind of game we lost here last year but this time through our will to win we found a way to get back into the game and eventually come out on top.”
Richman held his nerve to kick the ball between the posts on 79 minutes after Tom Hitchcock and teenage debutant Dan Green dotted down either side of half time.
Coventry are next in action against Nottingham in the Premiership Rugby Cup on Friday, November 1 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Lady Bay Ground.
