RUGBY UNION - Coventry Rugby sign trio of young hopefuls

COVENTRY Rugby have added three young hopefuls, Charlie Robson, Steff Davies and Dan Green, to their squad for the 2024/25 season.

Pacy winger Robson has played an important part of Berkshire-based club Rams’ National One success over consecutive seasons during which they have finished as runners-up to Cambridge and Chinnor. He is also currently part of England Sevens training camps.

The 22-year-old, who joined Rams in 2021 from Cobham RFC having also been attached to Ealing’s junior academy in his teenage years, says playing professionally is a dream come true.

Robson said: “I always longed to be in a full-time rugby environment as a young kid growing up. I’m hoping that enables me to develop as a player.”

Full back Davies played alongside Will Rigg, Eliot Salt and Daf-Rhys Tiueti during the course of his three years at Cardiff Met University.

The 22-year-old describes himself as ‘a bit of a late bloomer’ and played his junior rugby for Pontypridd.

Davies worked his way into the Cardiff Met squad midway through his first year playing at fly half, centre and full back and after recently completing his degree is now hoping to make a mark on the Championship.

Davies said: “I kept in touch with Riggy and he’s told me a lot about Cov and how they play. I’m hoping I can have a good pre-season and get some game time and exposure.”

Second-row Green joins from National Two West Newport (Salop) after spells with Sale Sharks’ junior academy, Trentham and Stone.

The 19-year-old Denstone College product is looking forward to working with Cov’s coaching team to develop his game.

Green said: “I’m very much looking forward to developing my defence and lineout work under Alex and James Scaysbrook. I’m trying to become the best player I can be and I’m hoping to also learn from the likes of James Tyas who has loads of experience.”

And Coventry head coach Alex Rae believes all three players have some exciting potential.

Rae said: “Charlie is someone who’s been on our radar for a while now.

“He’s had a really good season with Rams and is a very exciting player who has some brilliant attributes that we look for in our back line. Couple that with how hungry he is to push himself and it’s the perfect recipe for us.

“Steff follows a well-trodden path out of Cardiff Met BUCS rugby. When speaking to him, what came across was a really drive and hunger to test himself at this next level. He has that little bit of X-factor about him which we’re really looking forward to seeing if we can transfer into this level.

“Dan is a young man who has a massive amount of potential. What stood out is how hungry and eager he is to reach the top – that mindset is going to put him in a really good spot and we’re really looking forward to helping him achieve his goals.”
