RUGBY UNION - Coventry Rugby slip to home defeat against Chinnor

COVENTRY Rugby lost at home for just the second time this season following a 19-14 defeat against Chinnor.

A brace of tries from Jordon Poole put Coventry into a 14-point lead after just five minutes at Butts Park Arena.

However, the home side failed to register a single point in the remaining 75 of the match.

And Chinnor scored 19 unanswered points to stun Alex Rae’s side who lost at home for the first time since October.

The result means Coventry sit sixth in the Champ Rugby table.

Coventry made a blistering start as Poole forced his way over for the game’s opening try after just three minutes and Josh Thomas converted.

And Poole dotted down again two minutes later as he ran a strong line to finish next to the posts as Thomas added the extras.

However, Chinnor responded on nine minutes when Will Cave broke through the Coventry defence following a series of powerful carriers as Callum Pascoe converted.

Coventry twice conceded possession at their own lineout later in the first half as Chinnor continued to grow into the contest.

And the visitors crossed for their second try on 34 minutes when Pascoe sold a dummy and dove over but could not convert his own score.

The home side lost Senitiki Nayalo to the sin-bin for a high tackle six minutes before the interval.

However, Coventry spurned a chance to increase their lead before the break as Thomas missed his penalty attempt.

That meant Rae’s side took a narrow two-point lead into the break while Josh Barton’s try-saving tackle just past the hour mark kept Coventry ahead.

Chinnor completed the turnaround on 72 minutes when Scott Hall struck from a lineout maul and Nick Smith converted.

Handling errors proved costly for the home side in the closing stages as Rae’s side failed to make the most of a late penalty chance to slip to a rare home defeat.

Coventry are next in action against Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday, February 7 with kick-off at 3pm at Trailfinders Sports Club.
