RYAN Hutler and George Smith both crossed twice as Coventry Rugby began the new league season with a bonus point 45-5 victory against Caldy.

Hutler touched down in either half while Smith struck twice in the second period with Matt Kvesic, Louis James and Tom Ball also dotting down at Butts Park Arena.

And the seven-try success means Coventry sit fifth in the Championship table with a game in-hand on the other 10 teams in the division.

Caldy scored their only points of the game on five minutes as Nyle Davidson forced his way over from close range following a well-constructed driving maul.

However, Coventry responded with their first try of the season on 16 minutes as Hutler ran a superb line to score under the posts and Evan Mitchell kicked the conversion.

And the home side struck again on the stroke of half time as Kvesic reacted quickest to dot down under the posts with Mitchell adding the extras to send Alex Rae’s side into the break with a nine-point lead.

Coventry scored their third try almost immediately from the restart as Pat Pellegrini and Will Rigg combined to set up Smith for his first try of the game with the former converting.

And with Rae’s men now in full flow, James crossed for Coventry’s bonus point try on 48 minutes after some neat handling and a fine inside step from James Martin.

The home side scored a third try in the space of 11 minutes as Ball applied the finishing touch from Obi Nkwocha’s initial break before Pellegrini added the extras.

Hutler grabbed his second try of the game on 75 minutes with an incredible sliding finish from Pellegrini’s cross-field kick.

And Smith scored his second try in the final minute from a lineout drive as Pellegrini’s conversion completed the scoring.

Coventry are next in action away at Ampthill on Saturday, November 4 with kick-off at 2pm at Dillingham Park.
