COVENTRY RFC suffered a heavy 50-5 defeat to defending RFU Championship champions Ealing Trailfinders – their first home defeat of the season.
Senitiki Nayalo crossed for Coventry’s only try in the second half as Ealing dotted down eight tries of their own in a dominant display at Butts Park Arena.
Coventry sit sixth in the Championship table having won two and lost two of their opening four matches.
And Ealing scored the game’s first try through Max Bodilly after visiting captain Rayn Smid tore through the home defence with Craig Willis adding the extras.
The away side doubled their lead when former Wales international Jonah Holmes stripped the ball and ran 60-metres to the line with Wills again successful with the conversion.
And the game was taken away from Coventry when Reuben Bird-Tulloch ran in unopposed after Holmes sliced his way through the defence off the first phase of a lineout.
Ealing scored their bonus point try before the first half was up as Willis dotted down after he spotted a gap in the Coventry defence before converting his own score.
The rout continued in the second period as Holmes finished in the corner for his second of the afternoon after a series of powerful carries by the Ealing pack.
Coventry scored their only try on 50 minutes when a well-timed lineout handed Nayalo a one-on-one opportunity five metres from the line as he crashed over with Patrick Pellegrini unable to add the extras.
Ealing responded with an almost unstoppable driving maul which led to a try before Jordan Burns dived over and Carlo Tizzano struck with the final play of the game to inflict a heavy defeat on the hosts.
Coventry are next in action against London Scottish on Saturday, October 8 with kick-off at 3pm at the Richmond Athletic Ground.
