RUGBY UNION - Opoku-Fordjour crosses for hat-trick as Coventry Rugby run in 11 tries against Caldy

DAVID Opoku-Fordjour scored a hat-trick as Coventry Rugby ran in 11 tries in a resounding 69-12 win against Caldy.

Opoku-Fordjour crossed for a treble of tries after the break at the Nick Newbold Stadium with a bonus point already secured.

Api Bavadra, Tom Bacon, Josh Barton, Jack Reeves and Tom Ball all crossed for tries before Opoku-Fordjour ran in a hat-trick.

And a penalty try extended the home side’s lead before Mackenzie Graham and Sam Maunder dotted down late on to add some gloss to the scoreline.

The result means Coventry remain fourth in the Champ Rugby table, three points behind Worcester Warriors in second, after securing a sixth successive victory.

Alex Rae’s side scored the game’s first try after just eight minutes when Bavadra broke through two tackles and stepped past the last defender to crash over.

And the home side crossed again on 21 minutes as Bacon ran in from 30-metres out after Graham pounced on a poor clearance and reacted sharply to release Bacon.

Coventry scored a third try on 31 minutes when Barton ran in unopposed after Jack Reeves carved open the Caldy defence.

The home side scored their bonus point try one minute before half time as Reeves weaved his way through the Caldy defence from inside his own half to score a fine solo try.

Rae’s side took a commanding 24-point lead into the break although Tommy Mathews received a yellow card on the stroke of half time.

Coventry extended their lead just one minute after the break when Ball received Bavadra’s offload and dotted down.

However, Caldy hit back just two minutes later as Will Robinson scored the away side’s first try of the match.

Opoku-Fordjour scored his first try of the game on 47 minutes when he ran an excellent line to finish under the posts.

Caldy scored a second try on 57 minutes as Ryan Higginson touched down and Kieran Wilkinson converted.

However, Opoku-Fordjour crossed for his second try a minute later when he bounced off a tackle and stretched over the line.

Opoku-Fordjour completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes when he dove over the line at Matthews added the extras to bring a half-century of points for the home side.

The referee awarded Coventry a penalty try five minutes later with Caldy’s Charlie Hyde sent to the sin-bin.

And Graham finished out wide before Maunder crossed for the game’s final try on 79 minutes to complete the scoring.

Coventry are next in action against Nottingham on Friday, April 10 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Bay.
