ALEX Rae admits Coventry Rugby were not clinical enough in their narrow 21-19 home defeat against Cornish Pirates.
Coventry rescued a losing bonus point at the death when Will Lane crossed for a try after Will Rigg and James Martin dotted down either side of half time at Butts Park Arena.
However, Cov head coach Rae felt his side should have turned their first-half dominance into more points as the Pirates scored two quickfire tries after the break which proved enough to swing the game in their favour.
Rae said: “Big games are about pivotal moments and we just weren’t clinical enough in the first half when we dominated possession and territory.
“We’re disappointed to come out on the wrong side of the result it was always going to be a tight match with small margins and unfortunately there were a couple of moments that proved pivotal.
“Their interception try, which came when we were looking very dangerous, was a massive momentum swing.
“It felt at half-time like they were hanging on and we hoped we’d then get away from them in the second half but the breakdown was a real mess as it wasn’t really refereed which didn’t help us.
“We scored some good tries but missed opportunities to get a couple more, in big top-of-the-table games you just can’t afford to miss those opportunities.”
Coventry are next in action away at Caldy on Saturday, February 3 with kick-off at 2pm at Paton Field.
