RUGBY UNION - Wasps hold on to claim first win of season after Bath fightback

JOSH Bassett ran in two tries as Wasps secured their first win of the season with a 39-31 win at Bath despite the home side mounting a spirited second-half comeback.

Bassett crossed in either half with Jack Willis and Will Porter also on target whilst Jacob Umaga added an impressive 19 points from the kicking tee at the Recreation Ground.

The result means Wasps sit 10th in the Gallagher Premiership table.

And Umaga kicked Wasps into an early six-point lead with two penalties before Bassett scored a wonderful try on 22 minutes when he grounded his own kick and chase.

The visitors extended their lead on 27 minutes following a TMO check when Willis powered his way over to ground the ball with Umaga adding the extras.

And Wasps grabbed their third try on 29 minutes with a sensational team move that ended with Porter diving behind the posts from Burger Odendaal’s pass out of the back of his hand with Umaga’s conversion putting the visitors into a 25-point lead.

Bath responded on 35 minutes when Matt Gallagher crossed in the corner with Orlando Bailey adding the extras before a further two penalties from Umaga handed Wasps a 31-7 half time lead.

And Wasps took the game out of Bath’s reach when Bassett scored his side’s bonus point try on 48 minutes when he ran in unopposed to finish in the corner with the home side down a man with Louis Schreuder in the sin bin.

However, that score sparked Bath into life as Tom Dunn carried the ball over the line from a driving maul on 55 minutes.

And the home side struck again on the hour mark, after Willis was sent to the sin bin, when Jonathan Joseph finished close to the posts with Piers Francis kicking the conversion.

Bath scored their bonus point try on 65 minutes, with Willis still in the sin bin, as Dunn scored from another driving maul to bring the home side to within eight points of their opponents.

A late Francis penalty looked to have secured a losing bonus point for Bath only for Umaga to complete his 19-point haul with the clock in the red with his fifth successful penalty that went in off the post.

Wasps are next in action against Leicester Tigers TONIGHT (Tuesday, September 27) with kick-off at 7pm at Welford Road.
