RUGBY UNION - Wasps win Premiership Cup opener against Newcastle

WASPS opened their Premiership Rugby Cup campaign with a five-try 35-21 win against Newcastle Falcons.

Michael van Vuuren crossed twice for Wasps with Greg Fisilau, Harry Craven and Kieran Curran also dotting down in front of just over 700 supporters at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Lee Blackett named a youthful squad for the club’s first cup match of the season and was rewarded when Curran touched down after just six minutes with Will Haydon-Wood adding the extras.

And Wasps doubled their lead on 18 minutes as Fisilau crashed over from the back of the ruck with Haydon-Wood successful with the conversion.




The home side scored their third try through van Vuuren on 32 minutes when he dropped over the line from a rolling maul with Haydon-Wood’s kick sending Wasps into the break with a 21-point lead.

Newcastle eventually troubled the scoreboard on 53 minutes when teenager Nathan Greenwood crossed for a debut try.


However, Wasps scored their fourth try on 58 minutes to reaffirm their dominance as van Vuuren dotted down with another powerful drive to the line with Haydon-Wood adding the extras.

And the home side ran in their fifth try on 62 minutes when Craven finished underneath the posts after a stunning run and offload from Immanuel Feyi-Waboso as Haydon-Wood remained perfect from the kicking tee.

The Falcons ran in two tries late on, with Haydon-Wood in the sin bin, as Josh Peters and Iwan Stephens crossed in the final five minutes to put some respectability on the scoreline.

Wasps are next in action away at Bath on Friday, September 23 with kick-off at 7.45pm at The Recreation Ground.
