Sian Rainsley delighted with silver at Youth Olympics

ALLESLEY triathlon starlet Sian Rainsley followed her top ten finish with a silver medal in the mixed relay event at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

The 17-year-old was brimming with joy after finishing eighth in the women’s individual triathlon last Sunday.

And she followed that up with an impressive performance in the mixed relay event where Rainsley had the honour of starting for the Europe Three quartet.

The Coundon Court pupil led the race out of the water and her team were in first place as final competitor Bence Lehmann of Hungary got underway.

But hot on Lehmann’s heels was fellow Brit Ben Dijsktra who managed to overtake the Hungarian for his second gold of the Games with the Europe One team coming home in 1:22.17 hours, 23 seconds ahead of Rainsley and co.

“I am over the moon,” said Rainsley, who’s performances in Nanjing are made all the more better after she battled back from pneumonia at the start of the year.

“We were ranked third in Europe so to come second overall is absolutely amazing and I am so over the moon.

“It is good to end on a high. This team event is good to do with all the other countries and we have got to know each other really well and it is something different and it makes it more exciting and everyone works together.

“It was always an aim to medal in Nanjing but I never knew how it would go so I am really pleased to have got one.”
