Sky Blues fans urged to back Coventry Sphinx for Midland Premier Division clash

Coventry Editorial 6th Jan, 2017   0

FOOTBALL: ALMOST 1,000 people came through the turnstiles to watch Coventry Sphinx over the festive break and the Midland League Premier Division club are hoping to attract another bumper crowd for their first home fixture of 2017.

Shawbury United are the visitors to Sphinx Drive on Saturday and with the Sky Blues not in action due to the FA Cup, Sphinx are hoping for another healthy attendance.

Earlier on in the season Sphinx suffered two defeats at Shawbury, who are new to the Midland Premier Division, in the FA Vase and in the league so they will be eager to put that right on Saturday. But they are in for a tough match with Shawbury sitting in 16th place, just five points behind Sphinx in tenth.

The visitors will certainly fancy their chances based on their excellent current form with only league leaders Alvechurch having picked up more points in the last six matches.

They produced a tremendous result last time out with a 5-1 demolition of title challengers Westfields, with Nathan Hodge adding four goals to his season’s tally of 24 goals in 21 appearances.

Sphinx won their last home match 2-1 against Leicestershire side Shepshed Dynamo and that completed the double after a 3-2 win at Shepshed earlier in the season.

Stuart Dutton’s side have produced an average of over three goals a game at home so far this season and after their mid-week away defeat at Loughborough University, they return to Sphinx Drive looking to add more points to their total in what has been a progressive season so far overall.

Students can attend Saturday’s game at a concession rate of £4 (on production of a valid NUS Card) as the club look to encourage more students to take an interest in non-league football.

Admission prices for adults are £6, while concessions (over 65s) can enter for £4 and under-16 tickets are free.
