A FIVE-STAR showing by Sporting Khalsa sent Coventry Sphinx crashing back down to earth after their midweek FA Cup heroics.
Daniel Westwood’s hat trick was added to by James McGrady and Gurjit Singh strikes as the hosts romped to victory in the Midlands Football League Premier Division clash.
Sphinx were blown away by the league favourites, going two goals down inside the opening 20 minutes, with Westwood notching his first when heading home from a Sean Williams cross.
The same man was on hand to put the ball away from Liam Armstrong’s centre, while Singh went close after tormenting the Sphinx defence and firing wide.
A header from Callum Woodward threatened to bring the visitors back into it, but for a Sam Arnold save to tip the ball over.
That save proved a crucial one, as Singh, on the stroke of half time, turned into space and smashed the ball into the corner to deal another crucial blow to Lee Knibbs’ side.
With the game all but over, Iysden Christie’s mis-hit cross almost sparked some life into Coventry when almost catching out Arnold.
But another simple finish from Westwood killed off the game after being picked out by James McGrady – who then turned scorer to compound Sphinx’s misery.
Sphinx go head-to-head with Stourport Swifts on Tuesday night at Sphinx Drive, ahead of Friday night’s (7.45pm) FA Cup visit to Mickleover Sports in the Preliminary Round.
