Still plenty of points to play for, insists Coventry City's Kevin Foley

There are still ‘plenty of points to play for’ in Coventry City’s battle to survive relegation from League One, insists defender Kevin Foley.

The 32-year-old former Wolves and Republic of Ireland player, signed by boss Russell Slade after leaving Charlton in January, said of his role as an experienced addition to the team: “You have to be encouraging the younger lads because they’re looking for advice.

“You need to make sure they keep their heads up. I’ve not seen any lads drop their heads since I’ve been here. Everyone’s up for the fight.

“Results haven’t shown that, but hopefully there are still plenty of points to play for.

“It’s about playing for pride and doing what we can do to affect the game.”

The Sky Blues after Saturday’s disappointing 3-1 home defeat by Swindon are 11 points from safety with a game in hand, and with 13 games to play.

Many fans fear Saturday’s result after four relatively positive performances was the final death knell with the task becoming increasingly desperate.

But Foley said having a chance to bounce back within three days at Bury tonight was welcome.

Speaking at yesterday’s press conference, he said: “We’ve gone from two positive results, Wimbledon away and the win last week, to a disappointing display really.

“… We got done by two sucker punches – crosses on the box and we weren’t goal side. We can’t really excuse that.

“… The best thing is we’ve got a game immediately on Tuesday. I was speaking to a few of the players and was saying that’s the best thing for it.

“If we can get a positive result it doesn’t wash away what’s just happened but we can get on the front foot again, and I’m glad this game’s come so early.

“I’m glad we’ve got two teams in and around us (including Shrewsbury away on Saturday). We can affect them, as much as they will try to affect us.

“If we can take points off them, that’s all that matters.”

He also said he was enjoying playing in midfield as he had done more latterly in his career, after playing most of his games at right back.
