Strong performances by Coventry riders at Cycle Speedway World Finals

COVENTRY Cycle Speedway riders enjoyed their best ever World individual finals day last Sunday at Wolverhampton, which concluded two weeks of intense competition at World championship and Test Match level for the Coventry club.

The club tracked no more than three riders in three respective World Final categories – the Open, Junior and Women’s Final.

Australian Bobby McMillan, Rugby-based Mason Phillips and 14-year-old Sammie Marsh all donned the Coventry jackets and represented the city in glowing terms by each having their own individual moments.

McMillan, who signed for Coventry earlier this season after moving to the UK from Adelaide 18 months ago, finished fourth in the Open World Final – just missing out on a podium finish following a run off with ex-world champion Marcin Szymanski.

McMillan said: “All my dedication in coming to the UK a year early, to base myself in Coventry and all my training has paid-off.

“I would like to thank everyone from the Coventry club for all their terrific support all year.”

Phillips meanwhile defied odds to finish seventh in the Junior World Final, and took the flag in his fifth ride to send the travelling Coventry fans into rapturous applause.

For Marsh reaching the Women’s World Final was an achievement in itself.

After taking up the sport in 2012, Marsh has progressed to become one of the Midlands leading female riders and she finished 14th with the highlight of her afternoon being a hard fought second place in her fourth ride to take her grand total to seven points on the afternoon.

Coventry`s next match is next Sunday (August 23) as they travel to old rivals Leicester in Midland League racing, with the Hearsall Common men looking to register a quick-fire double, after their home victory over Leicester last month.
